I Had a Near-Death Experience, So I’m Going to Talk About It

On an internet message board, one poster was trying to share a strange experience that they had heard from their middle school teacher.
My middle school teacher’s mysterious experience. I’ve posted about this before but couldn’t write it well, so I want to try again. I’ll write if there’s any response.
- [2]Please write it. There haven’t been any mysterious or otherworldly stories lately, so I’m starving for one.
Thanks for the response, I’ll write it now. It’s relatively short. I’ll refer to the teacher as A below. One morning when A was in elementary school. A woke up to their mother’s voice as usual and was preparing to go to school. At that time, A lived in a detached house, and A slept in a room on the second floor. A’s house had a structure where the entrance hall would naturally come into view when you descended the stairs. As A was going down the stairs to the first floor, they noticed an unfamiliar figure at the entrance. That figure turned out to be a pure white old woman, and when A fearfully approached the old woman who had her back turned, the old woman turned around, and their eyes met. The moment their eyes met, A was instantly transported (warped?) to a boat flowing on a river. The old woman from before was at the front of the boat, and a large man was at the back. The large man was completely black with a featureless face, and he didn’t speak at all, just standing on the boat. After flowing on the river for a while, suddenly the scene changed again, and this time A was transported to a completely white, vast room with only one door. There was apparently the old woman, the large man, and another person who looked like an angel (this part is a bit hazy in my memory). While A was dumbfounded, the old woman, large man, and angel suddenly started talking, saying things like “We brought the wrong person” and so on. After their discussion ended, the angel came to A and said, “It seems we brought the wrong person by mistake. If you drink this medicine, you can return to where you were. Go out through that door and drink it. Drink it quickly because there are many people who want this medicine.” A was given the medicine. When A opened the door and left the room, there were many ghostly figures who wanted the medicine, so A got scared and immediately drank it. Then A lost consciousness, and when A woke up, it was a normal morning, and A was back in bed in their room.
- [12]Oh, interesting, go on
So, that’s the extent of the teacher’s experience, but the teacher says there’s one thing they can’t remember despite remembering this experience so clearly. That’s the part where the old woman, large man, and angel were talking about “We brought the wrong person, this one should have been brought at age ◯◯” – specifically the “””””age ◯◯””””” part. In other words, according to the teacher, the old woman and large man were death gods or some kind of messengers who bring the dead to the afterlife, and they mistakenly brought the teacher and almost took them to the afterlife. The river they first warped to was probably the Sanzu River (the Buddhist equivalent of the River Styx). The reason why many people wanted the medicine that the angel gave is that drinking it allows you to return to the mortal world. The “should have been brought at age ◯◯” probably refers to the age when the teacher will die in the future, but the teacher can’t remember just that part, so they find it mysterious and eerie. I remember getting a strange chill when I heard this story. So, that’s the whole story. The teacher seems to have had very strong spiritual sensitivity when they were young and has had various other mysterious experiences. Apparently, it’s completely gone now. If you have any questions, I’ll answer them as best as I can remember.

- [23]How did you end up hearing this story from your teacher?
That teacher was someone who would chat about random topics in almost every class. I wrote about the one that got the biggest reaction among the many stories the teacher told.
- [28]What about other episodes?
In Japan, it’s common to hear stories of people with “spiritual sensitivity” feeling something at battle sites or fierce battlegrounds. Okinawa is a region that suffered many casualties during World War II.
As for spiritual stories, when the teacher was a student and went to Okinawa on a school trip, they felt a strange uneasiness when the bus passed by a field. Later, when they asked about it, they found out that the area around that field was a fierce battle site during the Battle of Okinawa in World War II. That’s one example. This person also traveled around the world when they were young, so they have endless stories to tell.
- [30]I love these kinds of mysterious stories. I want to hear more.
In Japan, there’s a phrase called “mushi no shirase” (bug’s notification), which refers to having a premonition that something will happen without any reason. It often means intuitively sensing the death of someone close or a pet.
For another story, when the teacher’s grandmother and pet died, they received a kind of revelation a few days before the deaths – suddenly the thought “will die” just entered their head. By the way, I’ve had this experience too.
- [32]That’s what they call a premonition
